Grading Requirements

The kata are taught at specific levels depending on the comprehension level of each student, following the KIHON kata, "Juni-no Kata".

Kyu-Grade Test Format

NOTE: The format of the test is entirely at the discretion of the Sensei.  He/she WILL change the test to ensure that you fully understand the principles and techniques!

 

I.  Kata

  1. Kata Execution;

  2. Bunkai (Kata Applications).

Refer to above table for the appropriate Kata/Bunkai for the grade being tested.

 

II.  Basics

The following terminology is used in this section:

ON-GUARD

From Ready stance (Masubi-dachi), move the
left-foot forward into Moto-dachi stance.

 

TURN-BLOCK-PUNCH

Turn with the front foot moving first, 
Down Block (Gedan-Bari), followed by
Reverse Middle Punch (Gyaku-Tsuki Chudan).

 

YOI

Assume Ready stance (Masubi-dachi) 
and await the next instruction.

TEST READY POSITION TECHNIQUE OUT, ACROSS THE DOJO ONCE AT THE FAR SIDE OF DOJO TECHNIQUE RETURNING ACROSS THE DOJO ONCE BACK AT THE STARTING POINT
PUNCHING ON-GUARD. Stepping forward in Moto-dachi, perform Middle Punches (Oi-Tsuki Chudan). TURN-BLOCK-PUNCH. Stepping forward in Moto-dachi, perform Reverse Middle Punches (Gyaku-Tsuki Chudan). TURN-BLOCK-PUNCH,
YOI.
KICKING ON-GUARD. Stepping forward in Moto-dachi, perform Middle Kicks (Mae-geri Chudan). Step into Masubi-dachi facing sideways ready to kick.  Turn head back down dojo. Stepping forward in Moto-dachi, perform Middle Side Kick (Yoko-geri Chudan). YOI.
BLOCKING
(Gedan Bari)
ON-GUARD. Stepping forward in Zenkutsu-dachi, perform Down Blocks (Gedan-Bari). Stop. Backing-up at 45º angle in Zenkutsu-dachi, perform Down Block (Gedan-Bari), followed by Reverse Punch (Gyaku-Tsuki). YOI.
BLOCKING
(Yoko Uke)
ON-GUARD. Stepping forward in Zenkutsu-dachi, perform Inside Middle Blocks (Yoko-uke). Stop. Backing-up at 45º angle in Zenkutsu-dachi, peform Inside Middle Block (Yoko-uke), followed by Reverse Punch (Gyaku-Tsuki). YOI.
BLOCKING
(Age Uke)
ON-GUARD. Stepping forward in Zenkutsu-dachi,  perform Rising Blocks (Age-uke). Stop. Backing-up at 45º angle in Zenkutsu-dachi, perform Rising Block (Age-uke), followed by Reverse Punch (Gyaku-Tsuki). YOI.
BLOCKING
(Nekoashi)
Step forward into Cat stance (Nekoashi-dachi). Stepping forward in Nekoashi-dachi,  perform Knife-hand Blocks (Shuto-uke). Stop. Backing-up at 45º angle in Nekoashi-dachi, perform Knife-hand Block (Shuto-uke), followed by Middle Kick (Mae-geri Chudan). YOI.
COMBINATIONS ON-GUARD. Stepping forward, perform any combination of Offensive techniques. TURN-BLOCK-PUNCH. Stepping forward, perform any combination of Defensive techniques. YOI.

 

III.  Kumite

The final aspect of the grading test is Kumite (sparring).
